Confronting the South: New Hampshire People During the Civil War
Exhibit on display through June 2

Letters from New Hampshire soldiers written during the Civil War about the day-to-day life of battle are on display in the deNicola Gallery. New Hampshire’s 18 regiments lost 4,882 men during the war. The letters reflect on the ordinary, such as playing cards and football and what was served for dinner. The former shopkeepers, farmers, teachers and blacksmiths also wrote of their eagerness to fight, and of experiencing injuries and deaths. The exhibition is a collaboration between the University of New Hampshire Museum and UNH’s Milne Special Collections.
